I've received a lot of wonderful feedback from folks happy to have TOACM back in their weekly rotation of webcomics and that makes me super happy! Thank you for taking the time to email me and comment on the site! You guys are awesome! #truestory
Just a quick note…the “Sketchcard of the Week” storefront has recently been re-branded. The SKOTW will now just be one aspect of the store which is now a repository for all of my artwork. You’ll be able to buy the upcoming TOACM book from this store as well as original art, prints, mugs, t-shirts, etc. and whatever else may be coming down the pipe here in the coming weeks/months.
Speaking of which, I’m running a “MARCH MADNESS” clearance sale at the store on the existing sketchcard inventory. Use the coupon code MARCH13 to get a whopping 50% off your order! See what’s available here: denverbrubakerart.storenvy.com
FOOTNOTES:
- Panel 2) When Inspector Pembleton mentions Mulveny lying she is referring back to the events of TOACM #152 “Tangled Up In Blue”.
- Panel 3) When Weston refers to hunting down the vandal of Capitol Hill’s memorial he is referring to the events which occurred directly in TOACM #166 “Outlaw Blues”, TOACM #168 “Another Man Done Gone” and TOACM #170 “High Water” though the entire sentence is a vague summery of this story’s events from Weston’s POV.
WORK-IN-PROGRESS:

That’s it for this week!

Love the three tone treatment and that last panel is storytelling brilliance!
Thanks Wouter! Brilliance? I dunno about that… *blush*
MUGS!? I’m in. I am SO in. *is not mug obsessed- no no no no*
Uh oh… I was afraid that’s what Mulveny was doing.
CM is not guilty! I don’t understand why Mulveny seems to have changed his mind about him.
Mulveny took in and hid CM (and Gus) more for Penelope’s sake than his own. He’s conflicted: as a cop he knows he should turn CM in for breaking the law, but he can also sympathize with CM’s desire to “do good”. Factor in too that he’s not exactly over being a scapegoat and asked to retire from the force, and by his old friend Inspector Weston no less!
I finally caught up with all the comics and I must say I’ve become a big fan.
At first I wasn’t expecting much, but I must admit that you have a really unique style that makes it stand out from all the other webcomics. It’s in black and white but you still manage to make it look lively through the use of shading and detailed backgrounds. A lot of love and time has gone into creating these comics and it really shows.
One thing that pulled me in is that the Checkered Man is an underdog character and I’m always a sucker for those.
He reminds me a bit of Darkwing Duck, one of my favorite cartoons as a kid.
I’m also a very big fan of the tittle cards, as some of them seem to have been inspired by the Batman cartoon series of the 90s, another one of my favorites.
And although you regularly make subtle references to other works of fictions you manage to make ToaCM feel original with its story and colorful characters.
So yeah, I’m a fan.
On a closing note: For some reason I imagine the Checkered Man’s voice sounding a bit like a less over the top version of Major Glory of the Justice Friends. Don’t ask me why…
WOW! Thanks Ramsey for the awesome comments! I’m glad you’ve enjoyed the series so far and thank you for the kind words regarding how much time/love is put into this comic. =o)
You know, people have asked me before “who’s voice do I hear” as the voice of the Checkered Man and I just don’t know…certainly in his mind he probably wishes he sounded like Major Glory, but this answer has always eluded me…
